MINERS ARMS 19TH MAY 2007
Hi... would just like to say i my wife & friend were at the miners arms sat night 19th & thought emerald were exceptional.... Seen the band 4 times now in the Morley area i.e. cross keys..... Just had to drop this line to say thanks again & also gave the band my third comment of them on the rock of the north site. Cheers again & lets keep music live.
Rock of The North comment.. - great site, worth a visit!!
LO rotn peeps beleive it or not I managed to escape over the wall from my belove`d keys last night (SAT) & ventured down the road to the other end of town to the miners arms were I had the intention of just staying for the first spot of EMERALD before it was spotted I was awol, trouble is I ended up spending the rest of the evening there .Emerald are an exceptional act with four great muscians & a front man that can hold any audience in his grasp. Got away well after midnite the lads just didn't know when to stop. They were headlining a biker show in pickering last week in front of a few thousand hairy bikers but in front of a few dozen in the miners they put in the same commitment energy & quality. Just a special mention about there lead guitarist ian heppenstall what great guitar work & never seemed to break into a sweat . Great night guys thanks p.s. Steve if you get chance give emerald a loo k in .
Tuesday 23rd January 2007 - Morley United Services Club - support to T-Rex
I went along to the "Ex service mans club in Morley" to see the legendary T-Rex in Concert, featuring the equally legendary Graham Oliver of Saxon fame on guitar. T-Rex played a storming set. Finishing the show with their most well known songs. Their experience showed as they flowed effortlessly from one song to another. The aural textures rising and falling, keeping the attention of the audience.
And this was the bonus. Supporting T-Rex was a local band called Emerald. They appear to have quite a following. And there is no wonder as to why. The band performed a slew of rock classics including "747" by Saxon, at which point Graham Oliver stepped out on stage to show his appreciation to the band, much to the joy of the audience. The singer (Tom) sang like a mighty warrior. delivering the songs with passion and fire. The thunderous drums of "Edge" kept the band on course as they charged through songs by Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest etc. The solid bass lines of Lincoln provided a platform on which the twin guitars of Jay and Ian could paint a sonic masterpiece. Emerald played well and I shall be looking out for them in the future. They didn't perform any original tracks, which was a little disappointing, but then they only had 45 minutes. Though the set seemed to be over all too quickly. I am looking forward to seeing their full show.
Paul Booker
What is there to do on a Tuesday, winters evening in Morley? Normally not a lot, but if you stayed in tonight you have missed a treat!
For just a token payment of £5.00 you would have seen T-Rex, a tribute to Marc and Micky. On guitar Graham Oliver of Saxon! This was certainly a surprise to Emerald who featured 747 in their set! Graham was impressed though and applauded the band and paid special tribute to Ian, the lead guitarist. He deserved it!!
The club was packed and we were all in for a night to remember.
Emerald stormed in needing no introduction to the local crowd. At the end of their set, which seemed all too short, the club was rocking. Like Paul, I was disappointed that the band did not play some of their original material, I have seen them perform before and their own songs deserve an airing.
The crowd tonight did have a lot of new faces not normally there at an Emerald gig. The average age was slightly older I would say - this set were here for a night of nostalgia with T-REX. From Ride a White Swan, to Easy Action, it was all included and we rocked the night away. This was really a double bill. Well done Emerald for a brilliant performance and thank you to T-REX and the United Services Club Staff for giving us all a great night out.
Andy Morgan
INDEPENDENT REVIEW - SPRINGFIELD CHARITY GIG MAY 2006
Tom commands attention as he storms from left to right attracting the will of the crowd like a whirling vortex. His band twist and contort to his ever-changing domain without ever loosing their own identities. Watching them is like looking at refracted light, their individual colours are glorious and the myriad of combinations that they create is simply breathtaking. Tom is blessed with a tremendous voice that easily copes with the selection of Classic Rock songs, literally devouring the lyrics, digesting them and then spitting them out to a horde of hungry fans, like a pope preaching to the masses.
Ian plays it cool on guitar, devoting his energy to his fingers somewhat reminiscent of Micky Moody in the Whitesnake days of old. Tinkling up “The Stairway to Heaven”, cruising on the “Highway to Hell” and sonically ripping through “Enter Sandman”. Ian’s partner on the string crusade is Jay. Jay is the wingman of the top gun. He knows his role and executes it with ease, escorting Ian through the “Smoke on The Water”, never leaving his side but never in his shadow. Jay casts his own light across the stage as he shreds, slides, scrapes and picks his way through the set.
Lincoln the bass player and newest member, slots into his surroundings nicely. Bonding the foundation laid down by the rhythms of Edge to the harmonies of the two guitarists. Edge lays down the beat with seemingly little effort, a finely tuned V4 turbo driving the band along. Not content with the meat and potatoes approach, Edge brings a whole three-course meal and still leaves you wanting more. The bass and drum solo section is another dimension that the audience is exposed to. It is an interesting selection of rhythms, grooves and ditties seasoned with a splash of humour.
Emerald clearly enjoy themselves on stage and the enthusiasm is infectious.
I understand from talking to the band that they are planning to write some original material together. Having delved into the member’s creative backgrounds, the outcome promises to be very interesting and I am looking forward to hearing the results. Had Emerald been around 20 years ago I’m pretty sure they would be considered a Classic Rock Band and not a covers band. Who knows…with the promise of new material planned Emerald may still lay claim to that title in 20 years time.
I wish Emerald all the best for the future and thank them for the time and patience they have given me.
Luke Foster.
